Once the location for a number of well-known King Bridges included in company catalogues and sometimes subject to controversy, there are only two which we can verify as still standing and Old Nan is scheduled for replacement soon. Click on the highlighted text to go to the appropriate page: 1. The Zenas King Memorial Beam Girder-1909 Granville, Vermont (See NEW 9/12/04 and 2004 UPDATE) 2. The Old Nan Bascule RR Bridge -1907 - Niantic River, Connecticut As of the beginning of 2006, short lift bridge across the Niantic River is still in use by AMTRAK, which operates the high speed ACELA trains between New York and Boston. It is one of a number of collaborations between Scherzer Engineering Company and King Bridge. (See 2005 UPDATE #2 and NEW 10/29/05) The following is a quote from the report of the engineers from HNTB studying its replacement. The Naintic River Bridge was constructed by the King Bridge Company in 1907, however the design was actually patented by Mr. William Scherzer in 1893. Due to the historical nature of the draw span, the Niantic River Bridge has been documented to Historic American Engineering standard and is archived at the Library of Congress. The existing bridge consists of five spans as follows:Span 1 50 ft. Deck plate girder span Span 2 - 26 ft. Deck plate girder span Span 3 69 ft. 3in Through girder draw span (moveable span) Span 4 70ft.3in. Deck girder span Span 5 76 ft 2in - Deck girder span The spans total 291 feet 8 inches of bridge length from centerline of bearing to centerline of bearing of abutments. The double track bridge is supported on masonry piers and abutments. The historic bascule span is a through girder structure which is 68 feet long from center of rail to centerline of bearing at the east end. The structure provides approximately 11 feet of vertical clearance above mean high water elevation. The existing horizontal navigational clearance is approximately 40 feet.
